Ziel der Forschungsarbeiten ist ein besseres Verständnis der molekularen Mechanismen von Gefäss- und Stoffwechselerkrankungen um eine frühzeitige Diagnose und wirksamere Vorbeugung (Prävention) zu ermöglichen. Besondere Schwerpunkte dabei bilden Untersuchungen der genetischen Ursachen von Atherosklerose und Fettstoffwechselstörungen. Ein weiteres Ziel ist die Etablierung diagnostischer Strategien zur Erfassung des individuellen Risikos für systemisch inflammatorische Erkrankungen.
Das Institut verfügt über ein voll ausgestattetes Forschungslabor für biochemische und zellbiologische Arbeiten sowie genetische Untersuchungen in humanen Studienpopulationen, Transgenen und Knockout-Modellen.
