We are happy to announce the 10th anniversary of the International Symposium on Global Mental Health.

This year’s symposium will focus on Mental Health in Developing Countries: The Past - The Present - The Future.

As early as 1993, the World Development Report - Investing in Health (WHO/World Bank) estimated that neuropsychiatric disorders contributed 10.5% of the global burden of disease (DALYs) and suggested that this could rise to 15% in 2020. Despite this striking prediction, mental disorders are still neglected.

The vast majority of people suffering from depression, dementia, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and substance abuse are living in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Most patients do not receive appropriate treatment - many are stigmatized with prejudice and social exclusion. This leads to serious psychological, physical, social, and economic damage for the individual, families and societies. Strengthening care and services for people with mental disorders is a global priority and demands additional investment alongside the political will to implement measures.

The symposium is open to all health professionals, medical anthropologists and students interested in the topic.
