No risk due to EHEC

Patients receiving treatment at the clinical center of the Munich University have no reason to worry about contracting an EHEC infection

The already strict hygiene procedures were tightened

More than 2‘000 foreign patients are seeking inpatient care every year at the clinical center of the Munich University. Because of the increased rate of EHEC infections in Northern Germany and some other federal states, more and more guests are concerned about the risk associated with travelling to Bavaria for medical treatment.

“Patients receiving treatment at the clinical center of the Munich University have no reason to worry about contracting an EHEC infection“, explains assistant medical director of the University hospital, Prof. Dr. Karl-Walter Jauch.

No untreated raw vegetables, leafy salads as well as sprouts and seedlings are used for the meal preparation at the clinical center of the Munich University and all other vegetables are fully cooked. Fresh fruits are pre-treated by washing them with citric acid. The already strict hygiene procedures were tightened. All employees received additional training on how to deal with EHEC-infected patients and on the special measures to be taken. EHEC-infected patients are isolated, treated in private rooms and are using private washrooms.

An increased incidence of HU syndrome associated with enterohemorrhagic E. coli strain-induced infections has been observed in several federal states since early May. The center of activities is in northern Germany. Of the more than 2‘000 reported EHEC infections, just 103 EHEC cases occurred in Bavaria. The number of new EHEC infections is decreasing.
