The "International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation" (ISHLT) has honored cardiac surgeon Prof. Bruno Reichart with the Pioneer Award for his life's work as a pioneer of heart surgery in Munich at the 35th annual meeting.

2000 members applauded when Congress President Professor Dr. Hermann Reichenspurner handed him the award. It is the highest honor that can be given by the international community.

In 1981 Professor Reichart transplanted his first heart in Großhadern. 23 transplantations of donor hearts followed until 1984.

This period marks the beginning of a first major transplant series in Germany. As the first surgeon in Germany Reichart implanted heart and lungs February 13, 1983.

After five years in South Africa as successor of world famous transplantation pioneer Christiaan Barnard, Bruno Reichart returned as Professor of Cardiac Surgery to the University Hospital Munich, Grosshadern in January 1990.

Since 2012, the former director of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Grosshadern has acted as spokesman of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich for the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 127 of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The research center is focusing in xenotransplantation.
