In 1981 Professor Reichart transplanted his first heart in Großhadern. 23 transplantations of donor hearts followed until 1984.
This period marks the beginning of a first major transplant series in Germany. As the first surgeon in Germany Reichart implanted heart and lungs February 13, 1983.
After five years in South Africa as successor of world famous transplantation pioneer Christiaan Barnard, Bruno Reichart returned as Professor of Cardiac Surgery to the University Hospital Munich, Grosshadern in January 1990.
There he established a heart surgical department for adults in neighboring Augustinum, a teaching hospital of the LMU. It is located next to the successful pediatric cardiac surgery with reference center for pediatric cardiac transplant.
Since 2012, the former director of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Grosshadern has acted as spokesman of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich for the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 127 of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The research center is focusing in xenotransplantation.
