Spinal Infections

Infections of the spine are a serious problem and many of the patients who suffer from these infections have a number of associated conditions (such as diabetes or a suppressed immune system), which make their treatment even more challenging.

While the majority of spinal infections arise as a result of an infection elsewhere in the body, they also occur after previous spinal surgery.

As the Orthopaedic department of a large university hospital, we see a considerable number of such patients, referred to us from other departments and from outside hospitals.

Treatment can be conservative or surgical, depending on the severity of the problem, the general condition of the patient and the stability of the affected spinal segment.

Surgical treatments range from endoscopic debridement of an infected disc space and minimally invasive percutaneous stabilization to major reconstruction surgery with vertebral body replacement.
