Motion-Preserving Techniques / Total Disc Replacement

In specific cases of cervical and lumbar disc degeneration, it is possible to use total disc replacement to treat a damaged and painful disc, which, in contrast to a fusion maintains the mobility of the motion segment.

However, long-term results with these implants are still scarce and mid-term results show that specific, implant-related complications and problems do occur.

For this reason, we offer disc replacement surgery only to patients, where we believe that the specific conditions are well suited and that the individual risk-benefit-calculation is in favor of such an implant.

We are currently in the process of evaluating the use of certain posterior dynamic systems, such as flexible rods, articulated pedicle screws and similar implants.

At this point in time, however, we only use these technologies in very selected cases.
