Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty

If the osteoarthritis only affects isolated the medial or lateral part of the knee joint a smaller implant that replaces only one half of the joint can be used. For the use of this so-called unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, it is important that no pain exists in other parts of the knee and that the cruciate ligaments are intact. Compared to resurfacing prostheses, the rehabilitation is shorter and the range of motion significantly better. Because the natural motion sequences of the knee remain largely unchanged with this type of prosthesis the majority of patients are very satisfied after surgery. Another reason for the high level of satisfied patients with unicompartmental knee arthroplasty lies in the minimally invasive implantation via an approximately 7-9 cm long incision along with minimal damage to soft tissues of the knee joint.
