Total Knee Arthroplasty

For the surgical treatment of advanced osteoarthritis affecting all parts of the knee an unconstrained resurfacing prosthesis is used as long as collateral ligaments are still stabile. For the implantation the boundary surfaces of the bone are removed and the prosthesis is generally fixed to the bone using bone cement. Between the femoral and tibial component of the prosthesis, a bearing surface, also called inlay, made of plastic material (polyethylene) is placed. Important factors for a clinical success of this procedure are mainly a straight leg axis and a uniform tension of the collateral ligaments in flexion and extension after implantation of the resurfacing prosthesis.
