Short Stem Prostheses

In younger patients (younger 60 years) there is a search for alternatives to conventional cementless prostheses since decades. In this respect the minimization of bone loss needed for implantation is the main goal. In recent years, the so-called short stem prostheses have prevailed. During the implantation of these implants the femoral neck is conserved and the short stem prosthesis is only fixed in the proximal part of the femur. Despite the shorter anchoring distance comparable low loosening rates of other cementless stems could be achieved. But a prerequisite for the use of this prosthetic concept is a good bone quality of the patient.
