The research program in the Nelson laboratory is centered on translational medicine, and includes studies of the biologic mechanisms driving chronic inflammation, immunology, chemokine biology and cellular recruitment, protease biology, the use of engineered adult stem cells in therapy, gene transcription, and general aspects of bioinformatics and systems biology used to identify regulatory pathways and networks.

The pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying the induction and propagation of chronic renal allograft dysfunction has been an important thread through much of his research. Chronic allograft damage is an important and poorly understood disease that also serves as a model for understanding the basic cellular and molecular processes driving progressive renal fibrosis.
