Tobacco dependence (ICD-10 F17.2) is a widespread addiction disorder that is often associated with considerable individual suffering and high costs for society. Most people who try to stop smoking without professional help and support are not successful.
Successfully stopping smoking or significantly reducing the number of cigarettes smoked always leads to substantial improvements in quality of life and health.

Below you can find answers to the most important questions about our outpatient clinic:

What kind of patients do we see?

Smokers thinking about stopping smoking or reducing the amount they smoke.
Anyone who has questions about smoking.

Do I need to have a diagnosis already?

If necessary, a diagnosis will be made at the tobacco clinic.

What happens at the outpatient clinic?

Medical and psychological consultation and treatment based on the latest findings from scientific research. Treatment comprises medical treatment options, basic behaviour therapy principles and concepts from motivation research.

The course we offer most smokers is based on the ’Smoke-free programme‘ that was developed by the Institute for Treatment Research (IFT) and the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA). The programme is regularly re-evaluated and also constantly updated with the latest research findings.
Scientific projects related to the effects of smoking and the causes and treatment of tobacco addiction are being planned or are in the approval process.

Smoking cessation in individual or group therapy is offered to all smokers. In addition, special help and programmes are offered to:

  • Outpatients and inpatients of our hospital
  • Patients being treated by other medical disciplines of our hospital (inpatient and outpatient, also at the bedside)
  • Hospital staff (in cooperation with the occupational health service)
  • University staff (in cooperation with the psychosocial counselling centre for LMU staff)

We also advise doctors and nurses working at our hospital on how to care for patients who smoke (smoke-free consultations).

What happens in a smoke-free course?

The compact course of the smoke-free programme consists of three weekly units, each lasting three hours, and two additional individual telephone appointments. In the first unit we build up or strengthen your motivation for a smoke-free life and you prepare to stop smoking. You set the date for stopping smoking in the first unit and you stop in the second unit (without reducing smoking beforehand!). In the third unit, we stabilise your abstinence. The individual telephone consultations take place after you stop smoking and after you have completed the final unit.

How much does it cost to participate in the smoke-free course?

The course costs Eur 250 but health insurance companies usually contribute to the cost.

Is supportive medication given?

Advice on concomitant drug treatment is given during an individual consultation or at the information events that are regularly offered.

How often do I have to go to the outpatient clinic?

That depends on your individual needs.

Do I have to register beforehand, and/or do I need a referral?

Yes. You should bring a referral for an initial consultation.
