Main Research Topics

 

1. Oculomotor research (together with Dr. Thomas Eggert): The main area of interest is the control of higher order eye movements (e.g. memory saccades, anti-saccades, vergence eye movements) and the influence of focal brain lesions on these eye movements. Furthermore, we investigate how these eye movements influence psychophysics as the recognition of targets etc.. In the lab, video-oculography, search coil, and 3 D presentation of target are established. Further co-worker: Dr. F. Filippopulos, Dr. B. Blum.

2. Limb movement control (together with Dr. Thomas Eggert): Limb movements toward a target can be done using different combinations of joint angles. In daily life the system restricts the use of this possibility and typically we use only a limited set of possible joint positions. How this is achieved by the motor control system and influenced in the pathological situation is investigated in the lab using an ultrasonic motion analysis system (Zebris) and target presentation as in the oculomotor lab. Together with PD Dr. J. Szecsi we also investigated if the electrical stimulation of the lower limb allows an increase in muscle power during cycling and if this also transfers to walking. The idea is that the electrical reciprocal stimulation of the limbs results in sustained activation of the spinal locomotor pattern generator. Further co-worker: Murat Can Özdemir

3. Headache and neuropathic pain: Based on the observation that general inflammatory processes are often followed by headache, we investigated the influence of cytokines and immune cells on headache, especially in primary headache syndromes. The laboratory is equipped with cell culture, RIA and NO measurement and histology.

4. Adult stem cells and bone marrow transplantation: Beside the clinical course and features of complications in bone marrow transplantation, where we could show the important role of adhesion molecules (like VCAM and ICAM) we have become interested in the possible uses of adult stem cells in the treatment of neurological disorders. We use in-vitro as well as in-vivo preparations and follow the question whether stem cells can be helpful in focal or global ischemia, brain injury or global hypoxia.

3. Somatic pain (together with PD Dr. R. Ruscheweyh): Unspecific pain back and limb pain is one major reason for retirement. We investigate how feedback training is able to reduce the nociceptive reflexes (spinal reflexes) and whether this also reduces pain sensation. Furthermore, we investigate if a deficit in this descending nociceptive control can be seen in chronic pain patients. In the lab the measurement of reflexes, quantitative sensory testing, and heat evoked potentials are established. Further co-worker: S. Krafft

4. Headache (together with PD Dr. R. Ruscheweyh, Dr. O. Eren, K. Kamm, V. Sorgenfrei): Headache is one of the most prevalent clinical symptoms. We investigate how the autonomic system is changed during headache phases and if the influence of the autonomic system can help to treat migraine. CGRP is one of the main transmitters of the trigeminal system and we measure the CGRP in the tears and the blood and correlate this with the headache syndrome. Together with colleagues from the children’s hospital (Prof. F. Heinen, Prof. R. von Kries) we investigate the influence of stress (school) and possible interventions on the headache disability. 5. Neuro-oncology (together with PD Dr. L. von Baumgarten): The lab established an in-vivo mouse model of the primary CNS lymphoma which permits imaging of the implantation of tumor cells in the brain and the further growth as well as the interaction of the lymphoma cells with targeting lymphocytes. Another objective is the identification of possible markers of the lymphoma or meningeosis in the CSF and blood in order to get better prognostic factors. 1) Infrared oculography (IRIS-system, Skalar Delft; AMTECH-system , Heidelberg) with the possibility of real-time processing (UNIX based PC-system) and stimulus presentation using a laser system or fast video graphics

2) 3-dimensional monocular search coil eye movement recordings (Remmel-Lab-system, USA)

3) Motion analysis by a 3-dimensional infrared video system (Elite, BTS, Milano) and 3-dimensional ultrasonic system (Zebris, Elite) with the possibility of on-line correction of the video-graphics.

4) TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation; single, double and rapid stimulation)

5) Immunohistochemistry; Radio-Immune-Assay, cell cultures, in-vivo experiments (Gerbil)
