Visiting Students

Representing one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals, there are numerous possibilities for clinical clerkships in our two surgical departments, i.e. the Department for General, Visceral, Transplantation, Vacular and Thoracic Surgery and the Department for General, Trauma, Hand and Plastic Surgery. Clerkships may range from 4 weeks (equivalent to the German “Famulatur”) to 4 months (equivalent to the “PJ [Praktisches Jahr]-Tertial”) and may take place at one of our two facilities: “Campus Innenstadt” or “Campus Großhadern”.

Students will be attached to one of the following teams:

  • General and Visceral Surgery (Private Ward, including some Vascular and Thoracic Surgery Patients)
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Surgical Intensive Care Medicine
  • General, Colorectal and Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Transplantation Surgery (liver, kidney, pancreas) and Hepatobiliary Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery (including lung transplantation)
  • Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Surgical Emergency Department and Intermediate Care Ward

Eligibility

Only students who are officially enrolled in a medical school will be accepted for clinical clerkships.

Language Skills

Please note that in order to participate in the care of our patients a basic level of German is required from all visiting students. Procedures may be explained toyou in English but clinical conferences, ward rounds and formal teaching will be inGerman. The better your German is, the more you will profit from your experience in Großhadern.

Tuition and  Renumeration

No tuition is required for clinical clerkships. Unfortunately, no renumeration can be paid neither.

Living in Munich

Life in Munich is beautiful but expensive. Your monthly expenses including lodging will amount to at least 600 EUR. We are not able to provide free housing or financial support to visiting students.

Insurances

You are responsible for your personal liability and health care insurances. Please ensure that these are valid for Germany.
