Welcome to the Unit Global Environmental Health

Head of Unit: PD Dr. med. Stephan Böse-O'Reilly, Dr. Joachim Heinrich

This unit

  • has specific expertize in health hazards posed by the use of neurotoxic mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) areas. We perform epidemiological field studies, risk assessments, preventive measures, and capacity building projects.
  • is participating in international research consortia such as HEALS and ALEC, which focus on the effects of chemical, physical and other environmental factors in combination with life-style factors in the course of life on health in populations. The use of modern technology such as satellite-derived images for environmental exposure assessment,  and modern sensor _omics methods allow modeling and are used to improve risk assessment.
  • is dedicated to transfer knowledge from science to health professionals. E.g. the health care system is increasingly faced with new challenges due to climate change-related health risks.
  • trains health care professionals to increase their skills and knowledge on climate change.
