Prof. Dr. Hohlfeld

Our institute is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of neuroimmunological diseases, that is, autoimmune disorders of the nervous system. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system “erroneously” attacks the body´s own tissues. By far the most frequent of these diseases is multiple sclerosis.

The Institute of Clinical Neuroimmunology was founded in 1999. It is the first university institute in Germany focusing on neuroimmunological diseases. In close association with the Department of Neurology of the LMU, Campus Grosshadern, we are seeing patients with multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, polymyositis, paraneoplastic autoimmune diseases, and other neurological autoimmune diseases in our outpatient clinic (PD. Dr Tania Kuempfel). Inpatients are treated in the Department of Neurology.

Apart from the diagnosis and treatment of neuroimmunological diseases, our main focus is on research into the causes and mechanisms of these disorders. Traditionally we have a close connection with Hartmut Wekerle (Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology, Martinsried). As part of the Biomedical Center Munich the spectrum of our research topics ranges from clinical research (group of Tania Kümpfel) to the molecular mechanisms and pathogenesis of neuroimmunological disorders (groups of Edgar Meinl and Klaus Dornmair), in vivo imaging of immune cell migration (group of Naoto Kawakami) and the development of new neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies (with the groups of Martin Kerschensteiner and Florence Bareyre). Our research is supported by funding from different research agencies including the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal ministry of education and research (BMBF) and the European Research Council (ERC).

Sincerely yours,

Reinhard Hohlfeld and Martin Kerschensteiner
