Postbiotica won the BioUpper competition for innovative Italian startups

08.05.2017 - The company developed natural medical solutions to prevent and manage inflammatory diseases

Postbiotica was awarded with the first prize of 50,000 euros at the national BioUpper competition for the most innovative Italian startup. Postbiotica is a microbiota company, founded by Prof. Maria Rescigno as a spinoff of the University of Milan.

Postbiotica has developed a new technology of modulating postbiotics, which are non-viable microbial products or metabolites produced upon microbial fermentation. These metabolic products are used as natural medical solutions, to prevent and manage inflammatory diseases like chronic intestinal inflammation and allergies. For example, butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid is a major energy source for the colon and has an important role in intestinal growth and differentiation and suppressing inflammation while regulating intestinal cell death. Another example of these postbiotics is lactic acid that is used in natural skin care products for its ability to maintain homeostasis and balance of the skin microbial composition.
