The Kids and Youth Academy at the Medical University visited the Department of Dermatology, Venereology & Allergology in Innsbruck. The kids from age 6-10 got a tour through the clinics and heard from Dr. Andreas Haim about the various kinds of skin diseases. They checked their own birthmarks with a dermatoscope and learned why it is so important to protect the skin from sun exposure. In the lab for Langerhans Cell Research the kids performed an experiment - after being dressed up in lab coats and gloves like real scientists. Assoc. Prof. Patrizia Stoitzner und Dr. Christoph Tripp showed the kids how to take tumor cells out of culture flasks and transfer them into centrifuge tubes. After centrifugation the cells were examined under the microscope. This way, the kids should learn how the daily life of a scientist looks like and hear about the research perfomed in this lab.
