Investigations on the prevalence of epilepsy, onchocerciasis, and other parasitic diseases in Mahenge District, Tanzania

In a high prevalence are for epilepsy in Tanzania, 300 blood and more than 100 CSF samples of  patients with and without epilepsy have been investigated concerning the co-prevalence of onchocerciasis. other filarial infections and schistosomiasis. The overall prevalence of parasitologically proven onchocerciasis did not show significant differences in the prevalence of epilepy in a large case control study.

Development of new moecular diagostic procedures for parasitic diseases

Real time PCR protocols have been developed for the differentiation of Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar, and for the diagnosis of various rickettsial infections, dengue and chikungunya fever.
