Description:

The working group´s main focus is on studies aiming at an improvement in diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of the three major diseases HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

We are covering the entire range from basic to operational research, including clinical research (new drugs and novel vaccines) and epidemiological studies. The majority of studies is taking place in Tanzania, at the NIMR-Mbeya Medical Research Programme (MMRP).

MMRP is a Tanzanian Ministry of Health Research Institute established in cooperation with the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, USA, and the Department of Infectious Diseases & Tropical Medicine at the Klinikum of the University of Munich. With 150 employees and a clinical, immunological and microbiological research laboratory, MMRP is among the largest HIV/TB research centers in Africa. Currently, seven members of the LMU’s team are supporting the research on the ground in Tanzania.

The working group is part of the newly founded Consortium PanACEA (Pan African Consortium for the Evaluation of Anti-Tuberculosis Antibiotics), which brings together three european universities and 10 african study sites, and which conducts clinical trials for the development of new tuberculosis treatments. Within PanACEA, our working group is responsible for clinical development of the drug candidate SQ109, in collaboration with Sequella, Inc.

On the following pages, some of our current and some completed projects are displayed.
