CIHLMU Center for International Health

With the inauguration ceremony on November, 5th 2009, the CIHLMU Center for International Health has been officially opened. The aim of the center is to integrate and harmonize the numerous development cooperation projects in health related fields already existing at Ludwig-Maximilians-University, emphasizing teaching, research, consulting & the practical implementation of health-related topics in developing countries in order to achieve the millennium development goals (MDGs).

At the same time, a PhD-Program International Health has been initiated within CIHLMU. Starting in October 2010, young academics from developing countries will be given a research environment in the field of health within a three-year PhD-curriculum. The sandwich design of the program integrates several module blocks held at LMU, Munich, alternating with research periods abroad, conducted in the respective countries of origin of the PhD-students. Aim is the establishment of a proper research environment within the partner countries, the generation of scientifically sound answers to health related topics in developing regions of the world, and eventually a multiplication of knowledge through teaching skills, established as essential element of the PhD-curriculum.

On June, 9th 2009 the CIHLMU Center for International Health was selected as one of five Centers of Excellence for Development Cooperation (EXCEED) by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The Center will therefore be funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for a five year period.
